Family reunions are awkward and boring for me. Partly because my mom has got one massive family. There is no way of telling who is my aunt, uncle, cousin, niece or nephew. I have cousins in their sixties and nieces & nephews who are in junior college.
When a relative I don't know comes up and talks to me I just have to go with the flow and pretend I know exactly who they are. But there's a big problem - I don't know whether to speak to them formally or casually because I don't know how I'm related to them. And the conversation topics either push me into a corner or put me in an uncomfortable spot. It's either "What did you get for the PSLE?" or "How's your school like?" or "Waaah, so tall! But you don't eat enough!" or "Did you try this carrot cake? You haven't? Go and get lahhh!" or "Tsk, you are so pale! I tell you ah, you need to do qi gong!"
Another thing. I am never left in peace! My parents always drag me out of my seat to meet my little nieces/nephews or to say 'hi' to Uncle ____ or Aunty _____. At the same time I'm also really bored. The elders spend the entire time playing cards and mahjong, the middle-age group sit around discussing politics, education and the economy, the little ones watch Cartoon Network and the teenagers sit in secluded corners with laptops. And I just float around wondering what to do.
