A lot of buzz has been going on about our Finance Minister Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam's recent comments about how most Singaporeans are content to be just above average and do not strive to be exceptional. Well, as a teenage student, these are my views about this whole 'striving for excellence' issue.
First of all, let us try to interpret what Mr Tharman was really trying to say. So, Mr Tharman most likely knows that most Singaporeans already strive to do well, whether in studies or at work. I mean, open your eyes and there are stressed bookworm students and workaholics everywhere!
He was probably trying to say that Singaporeans do strive, but not hard enough in order to attain a certain level of achievement. Here's the problem: That level of achievement is what he considers as exceptional, or excellent.
The standard of 'excellence' varies from one person to another. 'Excellent' could mean a passing grade for one student, 75% for another, and full marks for yet another, based on their academic capabilities.
And when they each meet their respective standards of excellence, should only the student who got full marks be commended for his efforts? Because only his mark meets the teacher's standard of excellence?
So, to the cabinet ministers we may not seem to be striving to be exceptional, but in actual fact we are. They just don't see it because we aren't exceptional by their standards.
