The story of a socially awkward underdog

The Series of Teen Misfortunes - Episode 3: The YOUNGER One Speaks Out

Caution: Melodramatic style comes out quite a lot in this episode.

Older siblings often... 'overrate' themselves. Sometimes, I think they have some sort of microchip in their brain sending out messages to them that they're neglected and never get their way, while their 'innocent, doted-upon' younger sibling always does. They think that we younger siblings are pampered and spoiled and get the best of all worlds!

Well, on behalf of all younger siblings out there, I'm here to set the record straight with all older siblings.

I do not own this image
We don't get all the attention and we're not liked more because we're younger. Here's some evidence I found lurking around my house.

Number one: there's at least one thick photo album dedicated just to my older sister's baby pictures. You would think she was shooting commercials for baby apparel. And when I finally found an album with some of my baby pictures, I was only in about half the album, and was never alone in a picture! I was either in someone's lap or on the bed with my sister squishing up next to me.

Number two: My parents wrote a journal all about my sister. Stuff like "Today, our little girl pulled herself up by clenching her precious fists round the bars of the crib and pulling with all her baby might!" The picture on the left depicts the scene exactly(though of course those aren't my parents and sister).

And why all the fuss over the baby you? Because you were the first born, aka the oldest. And by the time we 'second ones' come along, our parents couldn't be bothered to take photoshoots of us or document our growing process. They only did that for you because they did it out of the sheer excitement of being first time parents! (and they were also too busy looking after the both of us, I suppose). The main point is, you've been doted upon since babyhood.

Which leads me to the conclusion that you think you are deprived of attention because you were too used to attention until we 'little monsters' came along. You got so much attention and suddenly, a small portion of that attention was taken away by us. But still, can't you see that being the oldest, you get a special kind of attention that we younger ones will never be able to get? Being the oldest, you're subtly treated like a breadwinner and successor.

And about that terrible misconception of 'not getting what you want', why do you think we younger ones often get what we want? It's not because of our age. It's because we possess the ability to persuade. And yes, some of us do use our cuteness as a secret weapon, but that isn't a crime. By all means, you can use it too.

I think I'll do today's 30 Day Blog Challenge right here, since it's somewhat relevant.

Day 10 — A photo of you taken over ten years ago

As much as I'd like to show you my baby picture, it'll take me ages to find a snapshot of me all by myself. And if I do, it'll probably be me pouting or crying because being a baby, your older sibling likes to bully you out of jealousy. =D
